The Lake
Oil on wood 6" x 12"
This is a recollection of a small lake near where I grew up in northern Illinois, in the moments just before dawn when I was taken with the slowly blooming colors of the sky as reflected in the stillness of the water. There had been more rainfall than usual in the recent years, and there were trees whose roots were flooded, and whose trunks rose eerily from the surface of the lake, like columns from the polished floor of an ancient temple. This is a small piece on wood that needs no frame.
Waves at Limantour Beach

A study of the shallow waves in a remote northern California beach near where I live. I find the surf to be very evocative as it washes across the long shallow flat sand at low tide. The grey winter sky gives the color of the sea a darkish, almost foreboding cast.
